Types of synthetic leather
There are various types of synthetic leathers on the market, such as silicone, polyurethane, vinyl, etc., each of which is used in different fields such as clothing production, furniture and home furnishings production, covers, etc. The use of synthetic leather produced with each of these materials is different; for example, PU or polyurethane leather is softer and more flexible and has higher breathability. For this reason, it is used to produce clothing or furniture. Vinyl leather is not as breathable as polyurethane leather, but it is suitable for products such as book covers and electronic product cases that need to be waterproof. Silicone has the advantages of both polyurethane and vinyl leather and, therefore, can be used for a variety of applications.
1. Vinyl Leather
Vinyl leather is made from a combination of two types of synthetic materials. The fibers of this type of leather are made of polyester fibers, and a layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is placed on it, along with a plasticizer. Vinyl does not require any preservatives or waxes, but it will get very hot if you expose it to sunlight. Vinyl synthetic leather also might crack over time.
2. Polyurethane Leather
Polyurethane leather is made by combining fabrics such as cotton, polyester, or shredded leather with a flexible polymer, then using various materials to try to make this type of leather look more like animal leather.
Polyurethane leather is most like natural leather in terms of appearance and touch. This type of leather creases like natural leather when sewn, which gives it a beautiful appearance. Since no plasticizers are used in the production of this type of leather, there is no risk of peeling or cracking, and you can use it for years.
PU leather is cheaper than natural leather, but its production costs are higher than vinyl synthetic leather, which is why it is mostly used for clothing production.
3. Silicone Leather
Silicone leather is one of the newest types of synthetic leather. Unlike PU or PVC, silicone is an organic polymer. The production of silicone leather is less harmful to the environment than other synthetic leathers, which is why it is more popular with environmentalists.
What are the most important applications of synthetic leather?
Synthetic leather is the most important alternative to natural leather and can be used in all areas where natural leather is used. For example, using synthetic leather for sofa upholstery is the most common use of synthetic leather in furniture. Synthetic leather is usually used in the production of various types of office or home furniture.
In recent years, synthetic leather has become more common in classic office furniture. Artificial leather can also be used in the production of classic office chairs. Even in some classic office desks, designers use artificial leather to create a uniform atmosphere for the entire office furniture set.
In the world of clothing, synthetic leather is also used to produce handbags, shoes, boots, gloves, and even hats. This type of leather is also used to produce jackets and coats, but its resistance to cold is less than that of natural leather. Watch straps, phone cases, etc., are also some of the other uses of synthetic leather in the clothing industry.
